It was a pleasure to meet Gavin of Fire Aware at the recent Construction expo at the Excel centre in London. Also great to receive such useful feedback with regards to fire safety and compliance. We are grateful for such an organisation as an SME and are delighted to be members.

An SPV developing an office to residential conversion in Gravesend. New internal construction and high specification fit out of two and three bedroom flats for rent. Construction commences Summer 2022 with an end 2023 completion. The SPV has taken fire strategy advice from a consultant in Fire Aware membership to ensure the planning consent for the additional storeys to be erected on the building takes the strategy into account at an early stage ensuring no surprises later on once consent is given and working design is created.

“This development will be safer than those we have carried out previously as we have taken as much advice as possible on the outturn fire strategy of the proposal prior to submitting to planning. In doing this we have added a second staircase to the application, which would have seriously impacted the project budget had we not known in advance of the consent being granted, pressurising our ability to achieve over and above levels of compliance”

ODQS are the 1st cost consultancy to join Fire Aware. This London based firm have committed to the Cost Consultants Charter which sees them focusing on fire safety from a cost perspective when advising their clients. As part of this costs can be committed to fire safety and ringfenced within the contract sum analysis so that the funds do not get re routed to support other less important parts of the project. This is a huge step forward in creating a cultural change in the development process as it prevents underfunding creating a race to the bottom.

Fire Aware have been asked to present at the upcoming Building Safety First Conference in London, on the 24th March, which focuses on the cultural change needed in the way safety is dealt with in the UK. Gavin Skelly FCIOB, will be presenting as part of the Leaders of Change section of the event, which focuses on how we will rebuild public trust in the sectors responsible for delivering and managing the built environment. Fire Aware have been asked to attend by the Building Safer Futures Organisation who see the benefits of the fire aware organisation aligning with their movement towards a safer future.

We are really proud that this Leicestershire based compliance company has agreed to stand with us and join Fire Aware, promoting in their corporate identity, the belief in its obligations to keep the people that live work and socialise in the built environment safe. Already providing accredited services such as the UK’s first independent IFSM accredited Fire Damper testing and maintenance course, Compliance Air & Water Ltd have committed to the Fire Aware Specialist Contractors Charter taking a position alongside us as a company that wants to see cultural change within the industries and sectors it works within.

We are really pleased to announce architects practice Andrew Jones Associates, based in the London Borough of Sutton & Surrey have signed the Fire Aware Designers Charter, committing themselves to a set of moral obligations in the way they design and produce information for their clients! A massive step forward for the industry as recognised practices such as this identify themselves as businesses that care about the occupants of the buildings they design and create.

Fire Aware is privileged to have supplied a copy of their “Don’t Have A Bad Day” video to the Building Safer Futures organisation for inclusion on their Learning & Excellence Hub! This video will help their members connect their onsite workforce to the moral responsibility they need to consider and uphold when delivery fire safety components.
